About your Innkeepers

John Leighow is a co-owner of Leighow Oil company in Danville. He began working with his father in the family-owned company in 1973. The oil company keeps John busy full time, but he still likes to meet and talk with guests at the Bed and Breakfast on weekends.

Carla Leighow was a stay at home mom raising their three daughters, Ann, Amanda, & Alyssa in the 1980’s. When the children went to school full time she worked in several different jobs such as real estate and secretarial positions at Geisinger Medical Center.

In March, 2012 the Leighows saw a for sale sign on the property at 12 Center Street and knew it was the former home of Abigail Geisinger, founder of Geisinger Medical Center. John and Carla saw the potential in this beautiful, historic home to become a bed and breakfast because of its close location to downtown and the hospital. They spent nine months renovating the property and turning it in to a bed and breakfast. They opened the doors on November 30th, 2012.

John and Carla want to share this beautiful, historic home with their guests. Guests can relax, and unwind in the lovely decorated rooms with many amenities, and enjoy a delicious breakfast in the morning. The Leighow family has grown to include two sons in law, Jeremy and Jim, and a beautiful daughter was born to Ann and Jeremy Patterson in April 2012, making John and Carla first time grandparents. On March 29, 2013 the Leighows welcomed a new grandson, Jameson John to the family born to their second daughter Amanda and her husband Jim Bachinger. John and Carla still keep busy at home with their three bichons…. Tia, Bella, and Lilly.

History

Abigail Geisinger, born Abigail Cornelison on January 27, 1827, was orphaned at the age of 15, with her older sister, Mary, after both parents had passed away. On March 12, 1866, at the age of 39, Abigail married George F. Geisinger at the Mahoning Presbyterian Church. George was an industrious man and over the years of his marriage to Abigail he had acquired various businesses in Pennsylvania. After some time, George began to become sick and eventually died on November 16, 1883.

After her husband's death, Abigail spent her time occasionally entertaining relatives and making trips to Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Ohio and once to Europe. Though she had acquired much wealth from her marriage to George, she maintained a modest lifestyle and contributed greatly to her surrounding community.

Abigail's contributions to the Danville area were very generous. She was always concerned about the welfare of the elderly women and purchased more than one home for them to live in comfortably in their declining years. She also owned one of the first automobiles in Danville, a Hupmobile, which she frequently used to transport sick and injured persons to Bloomsburg where one of the few area hospitals was located.

It has been said that these experiences may have been what convinced her to build her own hospital. It was in the parlor of her home on Center Street that Abigail met with three of her fellow townspeople, revealing her dream to build a modern general hospital in memory of her husband. This was her greatest gift to the town of Danville.

In 1912, Abigail purchased the William H. Magill property for her hospital. Her uncompromising demand was to "Make my hospital right, make it the best". On September 12, 1915, the George F. Geisinger Memorial Hospital was completed.

Abigail Geisinger spent her final years in her Center Street home and in 1921, died at the age of 94. She left over one million dollars for the operation of the Geisinger Memorial Hospital and now lies buried in a cemetery overlooking the institution she created.

The Abigail House Bed and Breakfast is located a short distance from Danville's downtown business district and six blocks from the Geisinger Medical Center, the hospital that began in 1915 as the George F. Geisinger Memorial Hospital. Abigail and George Geisinger lived in their Center Street home from 1880 until 1883. George died in 1883 but Abigail continued her residence here until the early 1920s when over 90 years of age, she moved into the hospital she built to stay until her death in 1921.

The neighborhood of Abigail's home was built on grounds originally owned by William Montgomery, the founder of Danville. These grounds eventually became the property of his descendants. Abigail owned most of the homes that were located on that first block of Center Street. She also purchased the Kaufman House, the red brick apartment building on the corner of N. Mill and E. Center, along with the attached home at 438 N. Mill St. In 1909 Abigail purchased from Isaac Grier, a Montgomery descendent, the empty lot on the west side of her home to extend her yard to accommodate a greenhouse, she was very fond of gardening.

Carla and John Leighow, recognizing the beauty and significance in the community, purchased the home in 2012. With its fully renovated rooms and guest-centered services, the Abigail House now serves as a bed and breakfast that is full of personality and history. Contact us to schedule your stay today!

We look forward to having you.
