Business Description
More than 150 years ago, Henry E. Steinway created a unique legend built on passion and a sure sense of quality, the result of striving for the perfect sound. As a master piano maker, he passed on his high standards to the next generation:
I WAS SEARCHING FOR A MEANS TO EXPRESS THINGS THAT WERE TRAPPED INSIDE OF ME, AND MUSIC WAS THE ULTIMATE MEDIUM FOR THAT.
(Christoph Eschenbach)
The Family of Steinway Designed Pianos is world-famous due to its rich heritage, innovative importance, and absolute perfection. The unique legend and the emotions associated with it live on today in each and every instrument.
Based on a strong sense of continuity and a commitment to achieving the best possible sound and very highest levels of quality, The Family of Steinway Designed Pianos accompanies people on their journey as they strive to express their true personality.
With Steinway & Sons, Boston, and Essex, The Family of Steinway Designed Pianos comprises three charismatic brands that are geared to different stages in an individuals development.
Mission Statement
STEINWAY & SONS was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway in a Manhattan loft on Varick Street. Over the next thirty years, Henry and his sons developed the modern piano. They built their pianos one at a time, applying skills that have been handed down from master to apprentice, generation after generation, ever since. The STEINWAY piano became the choice for ninety-eight percent of concertizing artists, none of whom are compensated to endorse the instrument. The STEINWAY earned a reputation as an investment for the owner in the legacy of future generations. To call a genuine grand or upright piano of STEINWAY & SONS one’s own is an overwhelming feeling. Far more than just an exquisite instrument, it is an instrument of the highest expression and creativity. A STEINWAY piano intimately connects artist and listener, and invites its owner to join a tradition of musical perfection, making it an invaluable investment.
I began my piano training in 2002, as an apprentice under Piano Kraft’s founder/ previous owner, Jim McGehee. Before opening Piano Kraft, Jim McGehee cofounded a very successful piano rebuilding workshop of twenty (20) years in Scandinavia. Teacher Jim McGehee received extensive training at the Steinway Park Royal London workshop, taught at the European Piano Technicians Guilds National Convention, and was the tuner/technician for the Royal Danish Orchestra and Royal Danish Music Conservatory.
After a full year of learning and training under Jim McGehee, I began tuning outside of the Piano Kraft workshop and inside the homes of private customers. During my apprenticeship, I learned not only how to do professional tunings but also how to voice, regulate, rebuild, and the art of moving pianos. I continued learning and working under McGehee until 2010.
In 2010, I became co-owner of Piano Kraft. During this time, Piano Kraft was the only Kawai and Yamaha dealer in Arkansas. I was the head technician for both brands.
In 2012, I began my own business adventure, Stephen’s Piano Shop, LLC. When I started my new business, I began tuning for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for their 2012 season, and I am still their current, exclusive tuner and technician.
In 2014, I started tuning for University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) under contract and became the exclusive university technician in 2016.
In 2015, I became the exclusive technician for University of Central Arkansas.
In 2016, I trained with Kent Webb at Steinway and completed the Steinway regulation course. I plan on completing all courses.
In March 2017, I opened my 6000sqf full rebuilding shop. This shop includes a small showroom where customers can play their pianos after work is complete.
In the summer of 2017, Steinway & Sons asked me to be the exclusive Steinway dealer for Arkansas, and I graciously decided to accept and begin that new journey. I am currently building Steinway Piano Gallery Little Rock, LLC. in Mayflower, AR at 657 Hwy 365. The Gallery will be a beautiful showroom to view Steinway pianos and will also be acoustically designed for chamber music and recitals. Being centrally located, the gallery will provide opportunities for some of Arkansas’s finest musicians to perform wonderful chamber music here. Piano teachers of Arkansas will also be able to have student recitals on the finest piano in the world – a Steinway. This Gallery will not only be a Steinway retail store, but it will be a place where the Arkansas music community can come together and enjoy the beautiful art of sound and music.
