Lake of the Woods is one of the finest fisheries in the United States. While the most sought after specie is the Walleye, other species abound. Trophy Northern Pike, great Sauger numbers, Smallmouth Bass, Jumbo Perch and Giant Lake Sturgeon can all be found in Lake of the Woods.

Each area of the Lake has its own predominance of certain species. Lake of the Woods is one of the most scenic lakes in the state of Minnesota and definitely the largest. Located at the far northern border of the state, Lake of the Woods covers parts of Minnesota, Manitoba, and Ontario.

The Western portion (MN) of the Lake is mainly one large body of water with open stretches of up to 45 miles, while the Eastern portion of the Lake (Canadian) is predominantly islands. The beauty of this lake is breathtaking regardless of which state, country or province you are in.

Lake of the Woods covers 2,000 square miles and is the size of the state of Rhode Island

Lake of the Woods has 65,000 miles of shoreline

Lake of the Woods has 14,500+ charted islands, most of which are inhabited by deer, moose, bear, Bald Eagles, and other wildlife

Lake of the Woods is the 45th largest freshwater lake in the world

Lake of the Woods is a glacial remnant left over from the enormous ancient Lake Agassiz

Lake of the Woods is also called a reservoir, as it holds water from the lake head-Rainy Lake, which flows 90 miles of the Rainy River before entering Lake of the Woods. There are five controlling devices that maintain the lakes water level.

Water from Lake of the Woods flows northward to the Winnipeg River, and on into Lake Winnipeg, it is part of the Hudson Bay watershed.

Lake of the Woods was once thought to be the head waters of the Mississippi. Lake of the Woods was one of the first pioneered areas in the mid west, and was valued for fur, lumber and gold mining.

The history of the Lake of the Woods region began in 1688 when Jacques De Noyon came from Three Rivers, Quebec to become the first white man to view the waters. Pre-historical evidence dates back more than 5,000 years, perhaps extending back 10,000 years to ancient people who followed the retreating glacial ice into the area.

Following Jacques De Noyon's arrival in 1688, there are no known expeditions to the Lake of the Woods area until Pierre La Verendrye came with a party of more than 50 men in 1732. La Verendrye found northern Minnesota populated by Cree, Monsonis, Assiniboine and Sioux Indians. The Ojibwe had not yet pushed as far west as Lake of the Woods.

The La Verendrye party was a victim of Indian warfare when Father Aulneau and 19 other men were massacred on an island in the lake by the Sioux war party which had set out to attack a Village of Cree. Today there are two islands on the lake which are identified as Massacre Island. Each has its supporters for being the site of the Massacre. History for the next 75 to 100 years was characterized by the onset of the voyageurs and rivaling fur trading companies.

The typical ice fishing season runs from early December through late March. Our day houses are available for use from shortly after sun up until shortly before dark. The water in Lake of the Woods is stained, which provides the best opportunity for success while fishing during daylight hours.

Throughout the winter, we're constantly moving our fish houses. Guests can expect to fish anywhere from a couple miles to 25 miles out on Lake of the Woods. Our guides are on the ice every day, enabling us to follow the big schools of Walleye to keep guests on fish!

Border View Lodge also offers spacious sleeper houses with an open floor plan to give our guests plenty of space to fish comfortably. Our sleepers are readily accessible on our plowed road, giving you the opportunity to come and go as you please.

Lake of the Woods offers some phenomenal Northern Pike fishing as well. The best trophy Pike fishing is in late February and March. The reason being; the big females are feeding heavily and concentrated in shallow water as they get ready to spawn.

We provide fish houses in prime Pike locations to stay warm while watching your flags. All tip-ups can be supplied at no additional charge. Border View Lodge even offers pleasant heated porta-potties on the ice. Ladies, especially, appreciate that luxury!
