Barnett (Barry) Mennen, MD is a board-certified pediatrician and currently licensed to practice medicine in New York, Virginia, and Maryland. He obtained his BA from NYU and his MD from the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. He practiced pediatrics for five years in a small town in upstate NY through the 1980s.
He joined the communications and educational branch of the pharmaceutical industry in NYC. Here he worked with drug companies helping update and educate physicians about new scientific findings related to their products. Eventually his work in industry became more strategic.
In 2005, he managed a strategic consulting team that was advising a well-known cosmetic dermatology company on how best to communicate their products’ benefits to physicians. It was while working with this company that Dr. Mennen became interested in aesthetic medicine: both the science behind it and the results that could be achieved with available techniques.
Though he began his aesthetic training and planned on practicing in New York, love and marriage took him to the DC Metro area last year and he thus obtained a medical license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.He met Eileen Reece RN through a bit of luck and fate: he was looking for an experienced aesthetic nurse in the area and she was looking for a physician who could devote all of their time to the practice.
After they interviewed each other and noted similar approaches to medical art and science, they began a partnership in September, 2010.Dr. Mennen has taken numerous courses in the past few years and continues to train in the techniques of aesthetics. He has now gained considerable experience and is a member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.
He is on the pathway to obtain board certification from this group. His special expertise includes laser resurfacing (CO2 and erbium), BOTOX/DYSPORT and dermal fillers. The only procedures he does are the ones he has been trained for and practiced in, and he will gladly refer you to a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist for needs beyond his expertise.

BOTOX (marketed by Allergan) and DYSPORT (marketed by Medicis) are both purified proteins that temporarily disrupt the communication between the nerves and the muscles where they are injected. This relaxes the skin surrounding the wrinkles helping to make them disappear or significantly soften them.
We use the smallest needles possible along with topical anesthetic in order to eliminate or minimize any discomfort. These treatments are administered almost always above the eyes to reduce lines between the eyes and the lines on the forehead. We would be happy to see you for a free consult.

Dermal fillers are gels that augment areas of the face where underlying tissue has diminished. These are used to fill in deep folds (such as the lines angling from nose—the “smile” lines) and soften our looks; they also give us a more youthful appearance. We mainly use purified hyaluronic acid products branded by Medicis as RESTYLANE and by Allergan as JUVEDERM, but also employ others with varying properties and uses.

GENTLEWAVES is a painless method for freshening the skin, reducing wrinkles, reducing pore size and producing a more even tone and color. It uses an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in a unit placed near the skin; it is applied for 35 seconds to each target area and there are 8 to 10 sessions. Results are seen gradually’ GentleWaves is FDA approved for treating wrinkles around the eyes.
While this procedure (called photomodulation) induces new collagen formation, the results are not as dramatic as those seen with the laser resurfacing. Effects are evident after the first 3 or 4 treatments and improvement continues for about 6 months.
IPL or INTENSE PULSED LIGHT
IPL or intense pulsed light is a highly efficacious non-invasive therapy for hair, pigmentation and blood vessel reduction. We use the AccelaWave system by Genesis. This system treats, essentially, all skin types and is quite efficient and painless

Microdermabrasion is a procedure whereby the outer layer of the skin is removed by gently exfoliating this layer with diamond tipped instruments. Our office uses the Altair DiamondTone system.
This procedure is an excellent adjunct to many of the techniques you may currently employ. This leaves the skin with a smoother texture and encourages new cellular formation. Once per month is ideal, but its use is recommended twice monthly for treatment of acne scarring, pigmentation spots and fine wrinkling.
LATISSE is a prescription product used to thicken and grow eyelashes. We’ve gotten terrific results with this product and our clients have been pleased. Our January newsletter has a more in-depth discussion of this product.
